Dear Fort Garland Area Residents:
Costilla County Code Enforcement has received complaints and observed an increase in the accumulation of junk, rubbish, trash, discarded materials, and other debris on some residential properties in the Fort Garland area. Maintaining clean and safe properties helps protect the health, safety, and appearance of the community.
This letter is a courtesy community compliance notice. It is intended to give property owners and occupants an opportunity during the month of June to voluntarily remove excessive trash, junk, discarded materials, inoperable items, rubbish, or debris from their yards and properties where such conditions may violate applicable Costilla County ordinances.
The voluntary cleanup period will run from June 15, 2026, through June 30, 2026.
Beginning July 1, 2026, Costilla County Code Enforcement may conduct follow-up inspections in the Fort Garland area. Properties found to be in violation may be subject to property-specific notices of violation, citations, fines, abatement proceedings, or other enforcement action as authorized by applicable County ordinances and Colorado law.
Examples of items that may need to be removed include, but are not limited to:
• Household trash and garbage;
• Scrap materials and debris;
• Abandoned or broken furniture;
• Excessive discarded items;
• Unsafe or unsanitary accumulations; and
• Other nuisance materials visible from the property.
This courtesy notice does not determine that any particular property is in violation and does not replace any property-specific notice required by applicable law or County ordinance.
